María Florencia Rubiolo, Paola Andrea Baroni

Summary: The present international economic context is characterized by an increasing interdependence of economies and finances and by a high degree of trade competition. The arrival of emergent economies, such as China, has generated an important impact on the economies of Latin America. The size of China’s economy allows us to think about the participation of all Latin American countries, a phenomenon reflected in the increase of trade flows between both regions. The objective of this paper is to analyze Chinese policies towards the region and link them with the role of Latin America in the international economic system and the possibilities of reformulating its participation given the fading influence of traditional actors in the region, such as the United States and the European Union. We will take into account the challenges and opportunities that the involvement of this emergent economy can generate in the region.

Musab Abdelgadir Widdatallah

Summary:Since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in the year (2005) to end fifty years of civil war in Sudan, strained relations between the NCP and the SPLM, made it difficult to address and overcome post secession problems. Tensions, conflicts and lack of confidence have spread rapidly at the expense of political settlement and exchange of interests. What happened, and what is still happening in Sudan, due to a chain of troubles over secession of the South, is of particular importance to the interests of the two countries concerned, but also to the Arab world, the Horn of Africa and the Nile Basin states. The paper considers the North South conflict as a merely determinant factors in reshaping the North South bilateral relations. GEOPOLITICS AND ENERGY SECURITY IN THE CASPIAN REGION- pełny artykuł (full article) - plik PDF

Justyna Misiągiewicz

Summary. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War led to a significant change in the configuration of Eurasian geopolitics. Such a reality created a “power vacuum” in the Caspian region as an area of influence by neighboring states and a distant players. Some analysts describe the geopolitical rivalry in the region as a “neo-Cold War” or “Great Game” with the United States, China and Russia being the main actors. In the second half of the 1990s, the global public grew aware of the energy potential of the post-Soviet Caspian republics. Not only countries but also a large number of international corporations invested in energy projects in the region. Newly independent states in Central Asia and the Caucasus hoped that their oil and gas resources would help them secure economic growth and political independence. This article surveys the geopolitical position of the Caspian region as an area of competition between the global powers and specifies its energy potential. It will also analyze the region’s pipeline politics to show the interdependence between energy market participants reflected in the geopolitical thinking in the region.

EASTERN EUROPE AS A POLITICAL SPACE - pełny artykuł (full article) - plik PDF

Ireneusz Topolski

Summary. The spatial extent of Europe has been redefined in the years after the Second World War. The most important event during this process was the transformation of political systems in the year 1989, which led to the dissolution of the whole Eastern Bloc and to the enlargement of the European Union in 2004. Defining the exact scope of Eastern Europe as a political space after the end of the Cold War provokes certain controversies. This stems from replacing the term ‘Eastern Europe’ with other terms, such as ‘Central Europe’ or ‘Central Eastern Europe’. Another reason for this situation is the usage of different ways of defining Eastern Europe, for example, describing it as a Post-soviet territory, ‘the space between Germany and Russia’, in relation to the European Union, or as a Sub-region of Central Eastern Europe. Eastern Europes need to be understood and perceived as the area comprising three of post-soviet states – Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova.
Key words: Eastern Europe, political space, the space between Germany and Russia, Central Eastern Europe, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova
