S u m m a r y.The use of Over The Counter Drugs (OTCs) in Poland is constantly increasing. Poland ranks third regarding the sale of OTC drugs in Europe. The most common OTC medications are pain relievers, anti-inflammatory drugs and cold and cough remedies. People are unaware of the dangers associated with OTC drugs misuse. Taking OTC medications without consulting a doctor first puts people at higher risk for adverse effects which include drug-drug and drug-food interactions, side effects and overdose.

S u m m a r y. Self-medication, a phenomenon observed all over the world, is closely related to easy public access to Over-The-Counter drugs (OTCs) available on the market. First of all, taking OTCs without consulting a health care professional may cause a number of dangerous adverse effects associated with taking too many medications simultaneously, including dietary supplements. The paper discusses OTC drug-drug and drug-food interactions.

S u m m a r y. Activation of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in the brain leads to modulation of the excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters release, and has been strongly suggested to participate in neuropsychiatric disorders. Cannabis consumption is related to an increased risk of psychosis development due to psychomimetic compound, i.e. tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Studies have found that another cannabis component, cannabidiol (CBD) might have antipsychotic effects in schizophrenia, mainly through enhancement of endocannabinoid signalling. The paper discusses the role of the ECS in developing psychotic disorders based on currently available results of animal and human experimental, epidemiological, imaging, and clinical studies. The authors review several research articles on the subject available from PubMed database.

S u m m a r y. Nanoparticles used in cosmetic preparations and drugs used on the skin are probably capable of overcoming the skin barrier. Titanium oxide (IV) easily overcomes this barrier without penetrating the deeper layers of the skin. It is possible to accumulate nanoparticles in the hair follicles [14]. In addition, nanoparticles can cause inflammation and damage to animal tissues [2]. As a result of exposure to nanomaterials, oxidative stress in the body can be triggered. This may result in the formation of free radicals and their pathological impact on the body [27]. A precautionary matrix has been introduced in the European Union. Its aim is to increase responsibility in applying the precautionary method. It facilitates the identification of probable sources of risk when using nanoparticles [3].

S u m m a r y. The article discusses abstract painting workshop held in a small village of Strońsko, located in the Łód Province. The project had the character of an anthropological experiment using the language of contemporary art, far from any associations with Polish folk culture. The workshop was attended by 21 women of all ages (1570). The information collected based on interviews and statistical data highlighted current problems common among country women: loneliness, unemployment, lack of education, lack of financial means to undertake attempts to acquire new professional competences (e.g. Internet access), alcohol related diseases, depressive disorders, domestic violence, lack of financial means for private medical intervention in case of emergency or chronic conditions. Many of these problems remain unresolved due to the misconstrued/misevaluated sense of shame and social rejection that is deeply rooted in social awareness. The article discusses the importance of occupational therapy through art and to prove the advantages of introducing the language of abstraction as the most effective element of releasing emotions through the use of unconventional tools and the workshop. Using the language of abstraction not only improves the competences of participation in the perception of contemporary art, but, above all evokes the potential of creative energy, intensifies the process of creative and logical thinking, encourages reflection and provides satisfaction, thus increasing the self-esteem of the participants in art therapy.

S u m m a r y. At the end of life oncological patients develop many problems due to altered organ functioning, which often leads to progressive multiorgan failure, loss of physiological needs, phasing out social life and altered state of consciousness. Both the patient and their family suffer. Symptomatic treatment is therefore a very important issue in palliative medicine, especially in relation to oncological care. The symptoms become more severe with the disease advancement. Primary symptom reported by oncological patients is pain that occurs regardless of the tumor location. The aim of this study is to present methods of efficient pain treatment in cancer patients applied in different settings of palliative care, i.e. hospital and hospice. The paper reviews literature on palliative care, including the recommendations of the European Association for Palliative Care, WHO. The Code of Medical Ethics and legal regulations oblige health care providers to ensure patient dignified and peaceful conditions of dying. Nowadays it is possible as there are many options, and lack of knowledge or prejudice cannot be an obstacle in bringing relief to terminally ill patients. Currently, many of these symptoms can be successfully managed to reduce the suffering of patients who cannot be expected to be cured.

S u m m a r y. Titanium is an extremely durable and chemically resistant metal. Due to its properties it is widely used in industry. Medical applications of Ti and Ti alloys are mainly focused on the use of rods, implants, plates, cages, valves and pins, even needles and stents. Those devices support the treatment of spinal curvature, reconstruction of bone tissue and ligaments or they shield the internal organs if natural protection is missing. The extensive use of titanium is related, among others, to its high biocompatibility.
The paper briefly discusses the characteristics of titanium and its alloys used in medicine

S u m m a r y. Chromatography has a great importance in the analysis of drugs and their derivatives in samples of different origin. However, the investigation of samples such as blood or plasma is difficult because their complex matrix may clog the pores of adsorbent and spaces between sorbent particles, and it decreases column longevity. To minimalize these effects, monolithic adsorbents were introduced as an alternative to spherical stationary phases. The paper presents the application of silica based monolithic columns in the determination of drugs and their metabolites in human blood and plasma.

S u m m a r y. Elemental analysis is important from the point of view of human health. It may be helpful in diagnosis of different diseases because they are often related to disturbance in the physiological or toxic level of elements. However, the determination of metal ions in trace amount is difficult; therefore, analytical techniques are still being developed to cope with increasingly complicated analytical challenges. New modifications of the devices are carried out providing an opportunity of their wider application in many fields. In the present paper, the most common spectroscopic techniques applied in analysis of biological and environmental samples are described.

S u m m a r y. Spectroscopic techniques, especially atomic absorption spectrometry, are used most frequently for routine investigation of trace amounts of toxic and physiologically important elements in samples of different origin. However, in some cases, other techniques such as ion chromatography or electroanalytical techniques can be also successfully applied.
In the paper, we present a brief description of both techniques and examples of their application to determine low concentrations of analytes.

S u m m a r y.The examination of lipid and protein peroxidation, antioxidant defense in rats with iodine deficiency (ID), insulin resistance (IR) and in terms of their combination was studied. It was noticed that ID causes activation of free radical oxidation of lipids. IR increasingly affects the peroxidation of proteins in examined tissues. In case of ID and IR combination, the activation of peroxidation against the background of significant inhibition of anti-radical protection was observed.
K e y w o r d s: iodine deficiency, insulin resistance, peroxidation, antiradical defense.
